Creativity on Concrete
Parking Spot Painting
by Zephyr Sternick
This summer before school started, juniors and seniors at Polson High School decorated the parking lot as they painted their designated parking spots. The painting started September 5 and lasted throughout the rest of the week. This event not only allowed students to personalize and reserve their spaces for the year, but also encouraged creativity to show school spirit through this second annual tradition.
Some students made it a point to steal the best spots closest to the entrance. Senior Haislea Sternick parked her car in her chosen spot and set up a motorhome on her friend’s spots, camping out overnight to ensure her prime location. Other students like Casen Elmore prepared for this hot August day by bringing a canopy and ice cold drinks to their parking spot to keep them comfortable in the 81 degree weather. Jerium Rushing also provided a speaker and fun music to distract the students from the heat while hard at work. Senior Ianna Young says that the heat was the worst part of her five hour project.
Junior Kellyn Nelson, whose spot won “Most Artistic,” used a long process to paint her welding parking spot. To decide on the design she was doing, she first looked up welding art inspiration because she knew that was the design she wanted to do, and then she came up with the rest of it with her own creativity. Since she had volleyball and soccer practice, it was hard for her to find the time to finish her parking spot so, it took her a total of six hours over two days to complete. All of the materials needed for her spot added up to 70 dollars including the spray paint, the paper for the stencils, and the other painting supplies.
While Kellyn was organized and particular about how her spot was done, senior Ianna Young showed up for the fun and borrowed everyone else’s spray paint cans instead of spending money to buy her own. She found her Spongebob design for her parking spot after looking through Pinterest to find a design shortly before and completed the spot in around 5 hours.
Whether students went high in their budget or just came for the fun, many students painted parking spots this year, bringing color to the start of the school year.
