Library Lunch and Learn
Autumn Spencer ~ December 13, 2024
Lunch and Learns, a new event circulating at Polson High School, focuses on introducing students to careers by engaging in conversations and presentations in a wide variety of subjects. Upward Bound and Native Youth Project of SKC host these events, which they have also introduced to the Ronan District. Morgan Maccione, director of the program in Polson, stated she helps students to “find the careers that they love and can stick with, and gives students the opportunity to talk one on one with specialists as well, and ask questions.” Maccione claims this program shows students that the passion for a career is not often found on a linear path and that many professionals often bounce between careers before committing to a profession. This program, which promotes college and career readiness, was initiated mid-November, and is hosted Wednesdays in the Polson High School Library during lunch. These events feature a variety of professionals such as Morgan Schutz from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ Division of Water and Engineering Resources, Steve Kiggins from Lee Enterprises, who works on the Missoulian Newspaper; Rebecca Leary from the FBI Agency, and Park Rangers from Glacier National Park. Amy Grout, with her assistant Derrick Rathe from Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, gave a demonstration of their diverse and captivating field of work on December 4. Claire Martine Benson, a student who attended the Wildlife and Parks presentation, described the occasion as a “fun experience with amazing speakers.”

After months of learning and perfecting their songs, the three bands showcased their talents. Rich Sawyer, the conductor and band teacher at the high school, had a Western theme incorporated into their music this year. Junior Mackinzi Bartel said her favorite song was “Nostalgia” by Rossano Galante because “It was really pretty and slow.” Bartel has participated in band for five years and says that her favorite part of band is Mr. Sawyer because, “He likes to talk a lot.
