Big Impact in Quiet Spaces
by Xander Becker
In Polson the library isn’t just a place for reading; it's a big part of the community. Whether you’re a student looking for a weekend job or someone who loves helping others, the library has something for everyone.
Juliet Boen, a 16 year old student, works in the children’s section of the public library. She started the job when she was 15 and helps put away books, clean up, and assist people who need help finding something. “I just really like books,” Boen said. “It’s fun being around them all the time.” Boen says there’s always something to do. “I thought I’d be sitting and reading a lot, but it’s actually pretty busy,” she said. The job has helped her become more confident when talking to people.
Abbi Dooley is the assistant director of the North Lake County Public Library. She didn’t start her career as a librarian. She studied business, but now she loves what she does. “I didn’t expect to work in a library, but I really enjoy helping people,” she explained. Dooley also helped design the new layout of the library during a big renovation in 2024. She wanted to make the space more open and welcoming for the whole community.
What’s New at the Library?
One of the biggest events coming up is the Summer Reading Program, open to all ages even teens and adults. This year’s theme is “Color Our World”, with fun activities focused on art. There will also be prizes like ice cream cones and free mini golf. A big end of summer block party is planned for August 7, with music, games, and more. The library also has regular events like the Board Game Club, held once a month after school.
Boen and Dooley both show how the library is more than shelves and books; it's a place where people connect, grow, and feel welcome. As Boen puts it, “It’s really fun. You get to help people and be around books all day.”
