Under the guidance of their coach, Cameron Milton, the Polson High School Boys Golf Team faced numerous challenging tournaments, culminating in a strong performance at the state championship where they secured third place. This achievement highlighted their development throughout the season and showcased their resilience. “Each player committed to practice, honing their skills while building mental fortitude to overcome challenges,” said Milton.
“As the season progressed, individual players began to shine, achieving personal bests and contributing to the team’s overall success,” Milton said“Getting a trophy at state is pretty difficult to do for any program. So yeah, it was a success. It was a very long trip, going all the way to Sydney MT, which, you know, took us about five and a half days, there and back. But yeah, it was good, nice.”
Particularly during the strong showing at the state championship, the mentorship within the group helped younger athletes develop the mental toughness needed for future seasons.
At the end of the season, the team gathered to celebrate their third-place finish and reflect on their journey. They discussed the lessons learned, emphasizing commitment, resilience, and the importance of maintaining focus amid adversity. The lessons of perserverance and the camaraderie formed over the season resonated long after the final match. With no seniors on the boy’s team, the players look ahead eager to build on this year’s successes and continue developing their mental game. Ryan Lake, a junior on the team, was asked about the mental game of golf. He replied with, “it’s a very mental game. You know, like you can shoot 88 one day and then you can shoot 100 the next.” When Coach Milton was asked how he gets his athletes across the mental mountain that golf can be, he replied by saying, “Just talk through a lot of stuff. A lot of it is just getting them comfortable in competitive situations. The more often you’re in the fire, the better it is, the easier it is to handle the fire."
