Boys’ Cross Country

Under the guidance of a new coach, the Polson Boys’ Cross Country team has experienced remarkable growth, both on an individual and team level.
Jason Delaney, the newly appointed coach, has brought a fresh perspective and renewed energy to the program. With years of experience in competitive running and coaching, Delaney has introduced a thorough and effective training system aimed at unlocking each athlete’s full potential. His theory centers around consistency, discipline, and teamwork—key principles that have quickly reshaped the team’s culture and performance.
One of the most effective strategies Delaney implemented involves organizing runners into level-based training groups. This approach allows for a more personalized and targeted development plan, ensuring that each athlete trains at an intensity suited to their current abilities. Beginners focus on building endurance and form, while advanced runners work on refining speed, pacing, and race strategy. Delaney also incorporates a variety of training techniques, such as interval workouts, hill runs, and long-distance endurance sessions, creating a balanced program that challenges athletes both mentally and physically. By tailoring workouts to individual strengths and weaknesses, he ensures that every runner has the opportunity to improve at their own pace while contributing to the team’s overall success.
The results of this approach have been evident throughout the season. Across the board, athletes have shown measurable improvements in their race times, stamina, and confidence.
Team camaraderie has also strengthened, as runners motivate one another to push beyond limits and celebrate collective milestones.
Senior runner Sheamis Cobb, in particular, has emerged as a standout example of the program’s effectiveness. Under Delaney’s guidance, Cobb has consistently achieved new personal records at nearly every meet, displaying both dedication and a deep commitment to self-improvement. Cobb states, “the coaching and new training methods are helping me personally, because of how fast I’ve been, just improving so much as far as personal growth and with the team, I feel like the team is getting faster too.” His growth exemplifies how the new training model not only enhances athletic performance but also fosters resilience and leadership within the team.
Cobb’s success, and that of his teammates, reflects the broader transformation occurring within the Polson Cross Country program. Delaney’s methods have instilled a sense of purpose and unity, inspiring athletes to take pride in their progress and strive toward shared goals.
As the season continues, the team remains focused on further improvement, aiming to make a strong showing at upcoming regional and state competitions. With a renewed sense of direction and a culture built on hard work and positivity, the Polson Boys Cross Country team is poised for lasting success under Coach Delaney’s leadership
