Girls’ Cross Country

Since Coach Jason Delaney took over as head coach of the Polson High School Cross Country teams, there have been major growth and positive changes within the girls’ team. Delaney’s structured training, enthusiasm, and focus on the details have brought new energy to practices and meets. Delaney encourages consistency, teamwork, and a positive mindset, values that have helped the Polson girls come together as a team and push themselves to new levels of performance.
This season has been one of development and adjustment, especially with several younger athletes stepping up to compete at the high school level. The inclusion of eighth-grade runners has added both excitement and challenge to the team dynamic. Competing alongside older, more experienced athletes pushes these younger runners to rise to the occasion, while also raising questions about placement and eligibility at different competition levels. Despite the mixed emotions surrounding where some of the younger athletes are allowed to race, the experience has proven to be a valuable opportunity for growth and learning.
One standout example of this new wave of young talent is eighth grader Taryn Cochran, who has already made a significant impact as the fourth runner on the girls varsity team. As one of the team’s top scorers, Cochran has shown consistent effort and focus throughout the season. Her performances have contributed important points to the team’s overall results and set a steady example for her teammates during competitions.
With the integration of younger athletes, there is a new depth to the team along with a promising outlook. Under Delaney’s leadership, the Polson Girls Cross Country team continues to build a foundation of endurance, resilience, and unity. The athletes have been training with renewed motivation, setting personal goals while supporting one another through the challenges of a demanding season. With a blend of experienced upperclassmen and ambitious underclassmen, the team is not only growing stronger in races but also fostering a culture of mentorship and camaraderie. Senior Brittian Davis said her favorite memory was going to Spokane. “We got to explore, and we went for a three mile walk around the entire town of Wallace. And it’s fun having the freedom.”
As the season progresses, the Polson Girls look forward to testing their skills against tough competition and continuing their upward momentum. After winning the Hamilton meet, the Lady Pirates headed off to divisionals and state with high hopes. With Coach Delaney’s guidance and a roster full of determined athletes, the future of the Polson Cross Country program appears brighter than ever.
Polson Lady Pirates took first place at divisionals with an 18 point lead. With three runners in the Top 5, Polson girls’ were well represented on the podium.
State race lead to three more Top 10 finishes, landing a third place team trophy.
Wrapping up the season with team and individual trophies at both state and divisionals, the team is ready to jump into off-season training, and build into next season.
