Track & Field 2025
by Karly Smith
With a new coaching staff leading into the season, the Polson High School track and field team has been soaring to new heights this spring, including two seniors signing in their respective colleges. The fresh perspective brought by the new coaches has reinvigorated the program, inspiring athletes to push their limits and reach their full potential. The almost seamless transition of coaches did not slow the Pirates in their pursuit for success.
Junior Kellyn Nelson has noticed the difference firsthand. “The coaches are more in tune with what events people should be signed up for, and they try to get everybody to do as many events as they can,” Nelson explains. This strategic approach has allowed athletes to not only explore different events but also develop versatility and confidence. Included in Polson’s achievements was senior Astin Brown’s new state record in shot put of 61’ 10.5”. The Pirates continue to see improvement as they prepare for divisionals and state.
One of the key figures in the transformation seen this year is Coach Nicole Bonner, who also serves as a school counselor. Her dual role allows her to connect with students on a deeper level, both athletically and emotionally. She works closely with individual athletes to help them understand the importance of when they will peak. Sophomore Afton Hatch states that, “Coach Bonner has been there when I lost confidence in myself and… helped me get through it.” By recognizing when athletes should be at their strongest and when they need to ease off to recover, Coach Bonner has helped many track and field athletes navigate the mental and physical challenges that come with playing a sport.
Coach Melinda Withrow, who teaches special education classes at PHS, has also made a significant impact, especially in technical events. Nelson highlights her work in the triple jump, including the importance of “the little things.” This coaching technique helped her lead to a personal best of 32’ 4.5,” which assisted Nelson in winning the triple jump at the Lake County meet on May 1st, 2025. Withrow’s hands-on coaching style and attention to detail have been instrumental in improving athletes’ technique and confidence.
As the Polson Pirates got ready for the second biggest meet of the season, they fine tuned their abilities. The Pirates showcased their hard work with over 35 athletes having a either a personal or season best. For the first time in over four years, the Lady Pirates are taking a 4 x 100m team to state. With twenty athletes qualifying for state plus additional alternates, the Pirates are ready to put their skills against the best in Montana class A in Kalispell May 22-24.
Together, Coach Bonner and Coach Withrow have created a supportive and energized environment where student-athletes are thriving. With an emphasis on individualized coaching, mental preparation, and technical refinement, the Polson High track program is clearly on an upward trajectory, poised for a season full of personal bests and proud achievements.
