Welcome to the World of Dungeons & Dragons
DND & Where to Find It
by Autumn Spencer
DND, also known as Dungeons and Dragons, is a hyper-reality dice game riding on the chances of probability. A (DM) Dungeon Master’s creativity in world building, and the craftiness of the chaotic players that adds a unique layer of individuality to each session. Polson High School’s DM, Adin Hunt, runs the DND club, with her current campaign she titles FireFoot’s Apprentices. Which is hosted on Thursdays in Kyle Dunn’s classroom, afterschool. Hunt even plans to host a pirate-themed campaign on Fridays. As well as possible monthly one-shot adventures that are designed to attract and allow new players to have a taste of the adventure, before making a full commitment to the community.
Hunt personally enjoys a highly interactive and descriptive world created to indulge the players’ sense of immersion, “so you can actually merge yourself into this world,” said Hunt. Her current hunting guild based world allows her players to set off into a realm of monster hunting, and create interpersonal relationships with both the player’s patron and fellow characters.
Lyniza Kenmille, a player in Hunt’s current campaign, plays the character Azriel, an Asim, or divine being. Kenmille, an aspiring DM, hopes to eventually host a myth-based campaign with similarities to The Odyssey and other familiar Greek-lore based missions. Although Kenmille is unsure of when she will host such a campaign, she enjoys Hunt’s own creative campaigns and takes inspiration from such environments. Kenmille describes the club as “all chaos,” a shouting, vibrant community, and a place where “you get to be yourself or play a person you probably wouldn’t be.”
Kenmille continues on what she enjoys about the community: “It’s bringing out your personality in a way you’d be comfortable with, because it’s not actually you, or playing a random person, it’s the type of person that you’d want to be.”
In Kenmille’s own words, “DND is fun for everybody. Everybody loves to make fun of it, like, ‘it’s for nerds, or you need to be good at math.’ No, you don’t. We’re terrible at it. But everybody there knows it has nothing to do with math, and joining in the club at school is the easiest way to start.”
Hunt herself describes her club as a fun, open atmosphere, “it’s a good place to hang out and laugh.” Stating how the club doesn’t require an entire prerequisite of skills and knowledge, but the willingness to step up and learn.
In the end, the Dungeons and Dragons Club community here at Polson High School is a slowly growing, motivated community that could always enjoy more dedicated or experienced players in their ranks. If interested, there are sign-ups in Mr. Dunn’s room, 101, or you’re welcome to approach Adin Hunt in her spare time.
The DND Club gather around to create their latest world map on October 28, 2024 in Kyle Dunn’s room, labeling out and devising the environments they will soon adventure in. They worked together as a fluid community to plan out their upcoming Pirate Campaign, which Adin Hunt plotted out around the player’s characters. (Autumn Spencer | Salishian)
